Fact or fiction? When fiction borrows from science can you tell when it goes beyond the facts? In TV series, fiction, and movies there are many examples of science being stretched for a creative plot point. But are there instances where it has inspired scientists and researchers to a new discovery? Is there a danger when the public are given a false impression of science? Can fiction inspire a career in science? This lively panel discussion will tackle common misconceptions around forensic science, test the audience’s ability to spot false examples forensic science, and provide real insight into how forensic scientists work. The panel includes: - Scottish crime writer, Val McDermid - Leading forensic science researcher, Professor Niamh Nic Daéid, Director of the award winning Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science - Head of Forensic Soil Science at the James Hutton Institute and advisor to the SEFARI Strategic Research Programme, Professor Lorna Dawson - And Forensic Anthropologist and PI at the Leverhulme Centre for Forensic Science, Dr Lucina Hackman About Curious: The Royal Society of Edinburgh launches its second annual summer programme Curious, a month-long series of online events bringing together some of Scotland’s leading thinkers and practitioners, curated to make us question the world around us Take part in thought-provoking talks, quiz-an-expert in a unique group discussion or get hands-on in an online workshop - quench your curiosity on a range of topics including: space technology; mental health; cancer research; video games; death; language; menstruation; conversational AI; and many more.
