A team from @SAconnects visited The Bahamas to see firsthand how had affected communities and how The Salvation Army is working hard to provide practical, emotional and spiritual support. The Salvation Army, established in London in 1865, has been supporting those in need without discrimination for more than 130 years in the Caribbean. The Caribbean Territory serves sixteen countries throughout Caricom including Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, French Guiana, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Sint Maarten, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Turks and Caicos. More than 60 thousand persons receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through a range of social services: food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless, and opportunities for underprivileged children. The Salvation Army has served survivors of major disasters since 1900. The Salvation Army has had a strong presence in the Bahamas, over ninety years in Nassau and over thirty years in Freeport, and will be involved not only in the immediate response but also in the long term rebuilding efforts. We foresee these efforts being in the 3-5 year in duration … if not longer. The Salvation Army is "boots on the ground" in the communities it serves, having facilities, employees, and volunteers available for day to day operations. When a large event happens, our facilities are impacted and our staff and volunteers weather it, coming out the other side ready to serve their fellow members of the community.
