@Hancock 'deepfake' & Uighur manhunt - The Week in 60 Minutes | SpectatorTV
Kate Andrews is joined by Liam Fox, former international trade secretary; investigative journalist Harald Maass; journalist Isabel Oakeshott; Spectator contributors Jonathan Miller and Katja Hoyer; alongside James Forsyth and Katy Balls from our home team. // THIS EPISODE 00:00 - Welcome from Kate Andrews 02:05 - Are the Covid rules unfair? With Liam Fox 12:50 - Politics update with Katy Balls 20:35 - How China hunts Uighurs abroad, with Harald Maass 37:05 - Who will replace Angela Merkel? 49:40 - What if the Hancock video had been fake? UNFAIR COVID RULES On Tuesday, Liam Fox tweeted that Brits were being treated like '2nd class citizens in our own country', because of the government's isolation rules for returning travellers. He tells Kate that the public are becoming irritated by what seems like double standards: 'What is irritating people at the moment is that they see the rules being applied in a very asymmetric way - too many exemptions for reasons that are not entirely clear and a suspicion that we are now following dates not data.' UIGHUR MANHUNT Investigative journalist Harald Maass describes China's global manhunt of Uighur Muslims. No longer satisfied with imprisoning members of the minority group living in China, Beijing is now extraditing Uighurs from countries that were previously safe havens like Turkey and Egypt. He tells Kate: 'We're not talking about dissidents. We're talking about normal families. In one case, the wife has not heard from her husband for more than three years.' EAST VS WEST Back in Europe, EU leaders are arguing over a new Hungarian law that would ban any display of homosexual content in schools to under-18s. Angela Merkel would usually mediate these clashes, but with the German chancellor quitting in September, who will keep the EU together? James Forsyth speaks to Spectator contributors Jonathan Miller and Katja Hoyer. Jonathan says Macron is focused on re-election next year, but will be keen to fill the power vacuum: ‘Macron is a European ideologue without much question. He wants a deeper Europe, and therefore he’s going to want to see a German in charge who shares his vision. But I also think Macron’s ambition is that he will be calling the shots more from now on.’ HANCOCK 'DEEPFAKE' At the end of the show, Isabel Oakeshott says she was offered the video of Matt Hancock breaking Covid rules in his office, but turned in down because she thought it was fake. Inquiries to find the source of the leaked footage are now underway, but Isabel says she hopes they're not unmasked: '‘I don’t really want them to find out who leaked the video because I think they did quite a public service. I believe they were motivated by wanting to expose what they saw as a hypocrisy.’ // SUBSCRIBE TO THE SPECTATOR Get 12 issues for £12, plus a free £20 Amazon voucher https://www.spectator.co.uk/tvoffer // FOLLOW US https://www.twitter.com/spectator https://www.facebook.com/OfficialSpectator https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-spectator
