The Sustainable Hour's video: Heidi s litter picking walks

@Heidi's litter picking walks
Tired of seeing litter everywhere? Meet Heidi, who’s taking action one walk at a time. Watch her inspiring story and see how small steps can make a big difference in keeping our community, parks and school grounds clean. 🌍💪 https://www.fb.com/tidyupgeelong Heidi: "I get annoyed with all the waste lying around, and it's not a lot of people creating it. About 95-97 per cent of people don’t litter. My little solution — because: "it's my world too" — is to go for a walk with a bucket and a pair of tongs. I put the litter in a bucket and cans in a plastic bag, earning 10 cents for each bottle and can, and picking up what I find before the plastic ends up in the trees. I avoid items with spiders but pick up crushed cans, too, because recycling aluminum is important. I don’t see this as a student problem; it’s an adult responsibility to set an example and say, "This is not what we do here." We should have pride in our standards. Around 95 per cent of students here don’t litter. If they did, the oval would be covered in garbage. So it’s a small problem that becomes a big problem fast — but it starts small. And that problem... there are solutions. Maybe if you’re seen littering, you’re not allowed outside for three weeks. Make some rules - just do something! Because the 95 per cent doing the right thing shouldn’t pay for the five per cent who aren’t. This is probably two or three weeks’ worth [of bottles and cans]. I’m saving up for a very expensive jumper. It will take 3,500 bottles. There’s about 250 here, so it’s a start! A friend asked, “Oh, what are you doing?” Now, every Tuesday, we go for a walk, pick up garbage, have a chat, and catch up. Sometimes we don’t find anything, which is fantastic, so we just go somewhere else. Sometimes we meet people who say, “We thought we were the only ones doing this.” It’s nice — we meet people, have a chat. It’s not something we push on others; we do it to catch up and do something constructive." - - - Join the Australian Tidy Up movement You can join and/or follow the Tidy Up movement by pressing the "Follow" button on Facebook. https://www.fb.com/tidyupgeelong
