The Syria Campaign's video: Meet Syria s Peacemakers: Fighting on the Side of Life

Syria is the world's most dangerous place to be a civilian. Every day, barrel bombs drop from the sky onto schools, hospitals and homes. Almost half of the country has been forced to flee their homes. The population is squeezed between the savagery of ISIS extremists and the atrocities of the Assad regime. The official death toll has now surpassed 200,000, and there is no end to the conflict in sight. But there is another side to the conflict -- the emergence of the peacemakers and the heroes: emergency responders, medical professionals, relief organizations and others saving lives with no regard for sect or creed, alongside journalists risking their lives to tell stories. This panel brought together members of the "White Helmets" -- Syria's voluntary first responders with Peggy Hicks of HRW, Dr. Zaher Sahloul of Syrian American Medical Society and Lara Setrakin of Syria Deeply to discuss what's happening in Syria, and what the international community can do. The event happened in New York on 24th September 2014.
