Mirzapur Shahi Mosque is a unique example of Mughal architecture in Bangladesh. The mosque is named 'Mirzapur Shahi Mosque' as it is located at Mirzapur village of Atwari Upazila in Panchagarh district. Mirzapur Shahi Mosque is 40 feet long and 25 feet wide. Recently the controversy of exact construction date of the mosque has been resolved by a decipherment of a black inscription in Persian inscribed on the middle door of the mosque. According to deciphering inscription, the mosque was built in 1656 during the reign of the Mughal emperor Shah Suja. There are historical differences over its actual builder. According to the Mirza dynasty descendants of this village, one of the founding ancestors of Mirzapur village started the construction of it and after his death, Dost Mohammad completed the construction work. The second opinion is that Malik Uddin of Mirzapur village is the builder of the mosque. He is also said to have founded this Mirzapur village. The remarkable feature of the rectangular terracotta designs on the front wall of Mirzapur Shahi Mosque is that it bears no resemblance to one another, each shining in its own glory. The front wall of the Mirzapur Shahi Masjid has three medium-sized doors with Islamic traditional terracotta designs. Three more door designs similar to the three front doors and interlocking panels have been placed on the back wall. There is no obvious arch in this mosque. The roof of the mosque has three domes in a row. The three-domed mosque in such a rectangular row is a unique feature of Mughal architecture. Equipped with Mughal architectural features, the dome of this mosque is connected by a descending belt. Each corner of the dome is adorned with a layered and designed minaret. The interior walls of the mosque are decorated with carved flowers of various colors, herbs and calligraphy brush strokes with the touch of a brush - which easily attracts the attention of the visitors. Mirzapur Jame Masjid is currently being preserved as an 'archeological resource' by the Department of Archeology, Ministry of Culture, Govt. of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. About three-hundred seventy five years old Mirzapur Shahi Mosque's architecture and aesthetics still attract tourists. Besides this landmark, there is another archeological site called 'Mirzapur Imambara'. It is just two hundred yards away from Mirzapur Shahi Jame Masjid. As the landmark is located in Atwari Upazila, it is also known as 'Atwari Imambara'. No exact information is known about the builder or date of construction of this Imambara. There is only one room inside this ancient Imambara with a dome of very simple construction style. At its entrance, there is an ancient installation which is now used as the entrance to this Imambara. Mirzapur Imambara is surrounded by a low wall. There are many graves next to Imambara. There is no information or inscription about whom these tombs are.
