Panchagarh Rocks Museum is a unique type of museum in Bangladesh. It is located at Panchagarh Govt. Women’s College in Panchagarh town. Prof Md. Nazmul Haque, the Ex-principal of Panchagarh Govt. Women’s College established the Rocks Museum. In the year 1997 & 1998 he collected a number of antiquities, old stones and objects of archaeological value which have been on display at the ‘Rocks Museum. The museum is opened publicly on 1 June, 1997. Ancient stones and other antiquities are the main attractions of the museum. The collection of Rocks Museum includes clay pots from around 700 AD, stones which contain Chinese inscriptions that have similarity with Nepalese and old Bangla letters, a decorated bamboo hedge from 1922, ancient iron clamps, decorated bricks of Mughal dynasty and old coins. People here did not know the history behind the antiques. Most of the collected items were found by the locals either by digging soil or from under the river beds. The Rocks Museum is separated into two galleries, external and internal. In the external gallery there has a vast number of rocks; and in the internal gallery, there are small stones of different ages, household items including 'kanchia', wooden sandals, 'topuni', pots, 'kia' and little pots for vermillion, utensils of the indigenous community. There are idols of Vishnu and Ganesh. Metal utensils, Panchapradip (lamps), Dhol (drums), Ektara (one-stringed local instrument), Sakamchuki (bidi made by the Saontals), Mughal warriors’ Swords, Bamboo Fences with floral designs inscribed with the date of collection and origin are in the museum. The top most attraction of the Rocks Museum is a pair of old boats carved out of single log of wood display in the internal gallery of main building. In the ancient times, ethnic people in islands in the Pacific Ocean used the boats made out of single tree trunks. They selected a log and removed sufficient wood to make the vessel light in weight, gave the boats sharp ends to maximize drag while making it strong enough to carry the crew and cargo. Such two ancient boats of Rocks Museum presumed to have been built 500 to 800 years back, were found while digging in the Chawain River near Amtala village and Karatoa River near Amorkhana village in Panchagarh district in the late 90’s. The bigger wooden boat is 35-feet long and was found under the Chawain River by some villagers. The smaller one is 25-feet long and was found under the riverbed of Karotoa, in Amorkhana village. Most of the Elements of Rocks Museum were collected from Bhitargarh castle area and nearby regions. Legend says king Prithu had his capital at Bhitargarh about 1,500 years ago.
