The Kaptai Lake is the main attraction of Rangamati. It has become a very popular spot to the tourists from home and abroad. It is the largest man-made lake in Bangladesh as well in South-East Asia. The Lake adorns Rangamati with artistic precision and connects almost every part of the district. Kaptai Lake itself is a thrilling experience for visitors. Blue water, green hills, an endless blue sky lost in the blue and green background provides an ultimate peace. Tourists can take an exciting boat ride in the Kaptai Lake and explore & witness the wonderful natural scenery of the area surrounding the Lake. The size of Kaptai Lake is approximately 11,000 square km, which was created as a reservoir when the Kaptai Dam was built during the 1960. Construction of the reservoir for the hydro-electric plant began in 1956 by the government of then East Pakistan. As a result, 54,000 acres of farmland in the Rangamati District went under water and the lake was created. Kaptai Lake has an average depth of 100 feet and maximum 490 feet which makes this lake, the third deepest lake in the world. Due to its creation, more than 100,000 ethnic people of 18,000 families were displaced. The palace of the king of Chakmas was also flooded and is now under water. But the sacrifice has been paying off to hundreds of thousands of domestic and international visitors. Kaptai Lake created a charming view as forested hills and plateaus rise from beneath the beautiful Lake water. This blue water lake draws a large number of tourists every year. Apart from enjoying its natural beauty, tourists can experience boating in the lake. The lake has thousands of tiny islands in it. Ethnic communities of Rangamati are living on these islands surrounded by the beauty of Kaptai Lake. There are a few water falls around the lake those are pretty gorgeous especially the Shuvolong falls. If you want to explore this part, you have to travel 1 hour and 30 minutes by boat. The boat ride in the middle of the lake is unforgettable. On the go, you can enjoy the scenic beauty of Borkol Upazila & the Chilar Daak falls. Nirvan Nagar at Balukhali Union under Rangamati Sadar Upazila is now becoming a popular destination of tourists for a standing statue of Goutam Buddhu & the scenic beauty of its surroundings. You can also experience ethnic communities living here. They are friendly and welcome visitors. You can even buy Hand Made clothes from the local tats. On the way, we were enthralled by the eye-soothing beauty of the lake. The fishermen were netting fish. You can enjoy the ravishing beauty of green along with the blue water of the lake. The peace which you will get from this journey is beyond description. There are also some excellent restaurants into the lake named Peda Ting Ting, Chang Pang & Tuk Tuk Eco Village where tourists can taste unique tribal dishes sitting in the breathtaking and scenic beauty of the lake.
