@Ben Nevis | Part Two | 1080p HD Documentary
Ben Nevis, situated at the at the western end of the Grampian Mountains, is the highest mountain in the British Isles standing at 1,345 metres or 4,411 feet above sea level. Ben Nevis is a huge Devonian volcano that collapsed in on itself in the Carboniferous period; the explosion was similar to that of Krakatoa. More recently, the mountain has been extensively shaped by glaciation. Although the last ice age saw ice several kilometres deep it was not enough to cover the Ben Nevis summit. The first recorded ascent of Ben Nevis was made on 17th August 1771 by James Robertson, an Edinburgh botanist who visited the area to collect botanical specimens. In 1774, John Williams provided the first account of the mountain's geological structure, he compared the ascent to “mounting ten St. Pauls without the convenience of a staircase." The 1883 Pony Track to the summit, also known as: the Ben Path, the Mountain Path, and the Tourist Path, is the simplest and most popular route of ascent as it starts about 1.2 miles (two kilometres) from the centre of Fort William; the path attracts roughly 75,000-100,000 ascents per year. The highest point is marked by a survival shelter and a large, solidly built cairn which serves as an Ordnance Survey trigonometrical point. As it is the highest ground for over 400 miles (644 kilometres), the nearest highest ground being Kebnekaise 2,098 metres (6,882 feet) in the Scandinavian Mountains, if you are lucky enough to have a clear day the views are stupendous. MUSIC USED: 00:11 - 01:20 The Rolling Stones – Brown Sugar 04:08 - 08:54 Neil Young with Crazy Horse – Down By The River
