@Scafell Pike | 3209 ft 978 m | The highest mountain in England
Scafell Pike, located in the Lake District National Park, is the highest mountain in England, and the 13th highest in the British Isles at an elevation of 3209 feet or 978 metres above sea level. Scafell Pike’ parent peak is Mount Snowdon in Snowdonia National Park. The summit plateau of the mountain is an enormous boulder field of shattered igneous rock dating from the late Ordovician period; with some the size of pebbles, and others the size of cars. Geologically, the mountain is part of the Borrowdale Volcanic Group. The shattered rock debris were caused by an amalgamation of frost action and earthquakes. Cairns mark meandering routes up Scafell Pike, created by those with the intention of making another climber’ ascent/ descent safer in poor weather conditions. However these cairns go off in all directions and thus make it a confusing place to be if visibility is poor.
