In December 2015, Dan Bowden and I planned to head out into the Lake District National Park, Cumbria, and wild camp for a week in January 2016. Although we were both well aware that the Lake District National Park is notorious for heavy rainfall; and that the ground was still saturated from storms 'Desmond', 'Eva', and 'Frank' because the trip was planned a month in advance there was no way of knowing that we would be hit by another storm on a powerful Jetstream named ‘Gertrude’. The plan was to wild camp and only stay at YHA Grasmere on the Friday night, but due to the constant torrential rain from the storm, which despite our best efforts soaked our sleeping bags, we did stay at a few youth hostels just to use the drying rooms. We also planned to climb Helvellyn, but we only got as far as Grisedale Tarn as the weather forecast for that day was heavy rain and 80-90 mph gusts on the summits. We then planned to climb it a different route, hoping to stay at YHA Helvellyn but when we found out it was closed we managed to stay at YHA Patterdale even though that was closed as well. Due to the horrendous night’s sleep we had the previous night, as our sleeping bags got soaked, we woke up late and did not have enough daylight to reach Helvellyn and only got as far as Nethermost Pike at 891 metres (2,923 ft) in wind speed of 70+mph and wind chill of -15°C. Later on in the week, with remarkably better weather conditions (in terms of rainfall), we were joined by Will Gilbert and Alice Bond, and on Saturday 30th January 2016 we all conquered the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike at 978 metres (3,209 ft).
