@The Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation Annual Legion of Honor Medal Presentation
On Thursday, February 13, at 1 p.m. the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum hosted the 2020 Legion of Honor Medal Presentations. The medals were presented by members of the Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation. The Legion of Honor Awards publicly recognize and honor outstanding members of society whose lives model the giving spirit and unconditional service to community, nation, and humanity without regard to race, religion, or creed exemplified so dramatically by the Four Chaplains. Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale awarded the Legion of Honor Gold Medallion posthumously to President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush. The award was accepted by their grandson, George P. Bush. The Gold Medallion is the highest and most prestigious award presented by the organization. It is given to a person whose leadership has brought his/her actions to National or International attention, and whose very life epitomizes the spirit of the sacrifice of the Four Chaplains. The Gold Medallion has been given to other notable individuals such as; President Jimmy Carter, Marian Anderson, Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale and Bob Hope. The Legion of Honor Bronze Medallion was presented to Commissioner George P. Bush and is the second-highest award and is granted for extraordinary contributions to the well-being of others at the Regional or National level. The Charles W. David, Jr. Lifesaving Medallion was presented to Officer John Barnes and Assistant Chief Gary Forward from the Santa Fe Independent School District Police Department. The award is given to persons who fall into two distinct categories: • Those who have saved the life of another at grave personal risk. This is normally reserved for someone who does this act outside of their professional position such as a police, fire or Service Member. • Those that have saved the life of another and no risk to their own person. About The Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation: The Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation exists to further the cause of “unity without uniformity” by encouraging goodwill and cooperation among all people. The organization achieves its mission by advocating for and honoring people whose deeds symbolize the legacy of the Four Chaplains aboard the U.S.A.T. Dorchester in 1943. The Foundation’s vision is to impart the principles of selfless service to humanity without regard to race, creed, ethnicity, gender, or religious beliefs.
