According to a local legend, a mariner found a Shivalinga while angling. A few days later, the area where the Shivalinga was found was raised and the land was exposed. The locals thus decided to build a temple and preserve the ecology of the region which often had tigers visiting. Though several tigers were spotted, they never attacked the humans.
