@S1H Series : Ep 1 : Thoughts after 1 month with the S1H : Plus Introducing my v-log to rec 709 LUT
**UPDATE** Here's the link to my colour tweaked version of the Nicest LUT from panasonic. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QJ-kxFhFvA14YPnHeWq2ue2UM0kOpBdX/view?usp=sharing My first S1H vlog. Using v-log . It's a V-log vlog! (nerd cringe) My thoughts after One month from a long time Sony videographers perspective. Preparing for weddings to start back up again soon, I have been trying to get the best shots possible straight out of camera. SOOC. Or straight out of the Ninja V as it turned out to be. It's taken me a month to finally be happy and confident to shoot with this camera along side my a7iii for weddings. Of course I didn't just buy the camera for weddings, in fact, I want desperately to return to film making. But I needed to justify my purchase. With my heart up in my throat for 1 loooong month thinking I'd made the wrong decision with the S1H (thank god for the timing tho) I managed to tweak-to-death a LUT that I liked! The ones that Panasonic provide, are... weird... I was a bit disappointed. The best ones were Nicest 709, then Fashion Lo Con and lastly perhaps LoCon Neu (neutral) was ok. But they all had problems. The least problematic for me was Nicest 709 but the skin was a bit too magenta. Plus it's a bit dark and muted and cotton candy like colours! But that was the best one! I'm not going to pay for a LUT (yet, lol) that I can make myself, plus... you'll see from my shots! Essentially I made my own v-log to rec709 conversion. I tweaked the magenta for skin tones and many other things, (BUT NOT TOO MUCH MIND YOU!! and no not talking about a tint shift either, but actual colour curve picker) I will definitely make a video on just that soon. And my LUT will be available for free if anyone wants it. Yes I ended up using v-log in the end, I was so expecting to just use standard or natural! But it just doesn't look right. It definitely didn't look standard OR Natural!! haha. Maybe I'm a bit spoilt coming from Sony, but it seems to suffer from some colour luminance pushing... and I don't want to push and pull per-colour brightness in-post on a profile thats supposed to be ready to go!! Plus v-log looked nicer in the end anyway. (Im happy to see other examples of Flat or Cine D or V or anything that looks nice AND multipurpose... its so weird that all my tests didnt live up to my expectations though :( ONE thing I have to mention here is, I filled out a support ticket to Atomos asking for the input LUTs to have an intensity slider. For my immediate purposes (weddings, and anything quick turn around) **not films**, having a slider for the LUT intensity would have saved me a few steps. And would be more elegant of a solution. Instead, I made a few LUTs with varying intensities. So I will manually adjust the intensity per shot. The other main hurdles was : the idiosyncrasies of the Ninja V. After many attempts. I unlocked the combination for using LUTs. Basically I need to have legalize turned ON! Not OFF! as I have seen some people recommend. That way, when I load the Ninja footage and compare it to my non-lutted S1H internal footage AND apply the same LUT to that, it looks identical. (Heart was in mouth for a while on that one) Last main hurdle was Adobe Premiere (yes I use it for 'fast' editing - 'fast' lol) To get the best out of the Ninja V prores 10 bit footage, you simply have to enable use Max bit depth on the SEQUENCE settings. Leave the other ones, (unless you have 2 days to spare to let it render). Did you know, you can actually SEE the 8 bit depth banding in the Scopes! I'll make a video on that too. But thats it for this video!! 1 month in the making lol. LET ME KNOW what you'd like me to test and or vlog about with the set up. At this stage I just have the Panasonic 24-105mm lens. And what a lens!! wow!! The close up shots!! The macro like shots!! wow. Can't wait to show some of those tests. The next lens is definitely the sigma 35 but 1.4 is well good enough for me!! Looks like I will use this camera as my 'tripod' camera for weddings and still use the Sony as the Gimbal camera. Auto focus is just too damn important! Plus with all my Sony experience I rarely miss a shot! I have to edit a wedding so I wont post for a couple of weeks. But do let me know what you'd like me to test! I sincerely hope you join me in this S1H quest. We can be noobs together :) Gear used: Sony a7iii Panasonic S1H Panasonic 24-105mm Atomos Ninja V Angelbird prograde v90 mk ii cards Samsung EVO 860 1 tb ssd i-Mac Retina 5k 27 inch Music by : artlist.io
