They are the right size, the right shape, they handle brilliantly and they are very quick. But what if you wanted to take one to the extreme? Starting with the Cayman GT4 or Boxster/718 Spyder, DeMan Motorsports of Blauvelt, NY offers a monster of an engine upgrade - a high-compression, 4.5L, naturally aspirated, track-ready beast. Starting with the car's standard 4.0L, 414-hp engine, the finished product makes 565 HP and 440 lb/ft of torque. To that, DeMan fits a close-ratio gear set for the six-speed manual transmission. First and sixth gear are left stock, while second through fifth ratios are shortened for better response and more fun. If the car had any shortcomings from the factory, these two (admittedly major) modifications fix them, and then some. As soon as I tried DeMan's demonstrator vehicle, I was hooked, and decided that it was the best sports car of all time, and I had to have one. Nearly 20 months later, I finally do.
