"Home by the Sea" was written by Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford and is the third track off of Genesis' eponymous 1983 release...Genesis. The LP was the group's twelfth album. The band decided on its title as each of the album's nine tracks were written as a group. The album cover depicts the shapes from a Shape-O, a children's toy made by Tupperware. For this reason, some fans refer to this album in conversation as Shapes. The album reached No. 1 in the UK and No. 9 in the US. It is one of their most successful releases. "Home by the Sea" tells the story of a burglar who breaks into a house only to find it is haunted. "Creeping up the blind side, shimming up the wall, Stealing through the dark of night, Climbing through a window, stepping to the floor, Checking to the left and the right, Picking up the pieces, putting them away, Something doesn't feel quite right" displays our thief's entrance into this home (by the sea). Although being careful not to alert anyone (at least human), the thief seems to sense he is not alone..."Help me someone, let me out of here, Then out of the dark was suddenly heard, Welcome to the Home by the Sea". Shortly after, the voices he was hearing are now known to him as imagery..."Coming out the woodwork, through the open door, Pushing from above and below, Shadows without substance, in the shape of men, Round and down and sideways they go, Adrift without direction, eyes that hold despair, Then as one they sign and they moan". Our ghosts, after flying around a bit, decide to tell the burglar their despair (that they are also captives, perhaps becoming so in the same way he now is)..."Help us someone, let us out of here, Living here so long undisturbed, Dreaming of the time we were free, So many years ago, Before the time when we first heard, Welcome to the Home by the Sea". For our "captured" thief, his penalty for his crime will not be public incarceration. It will imprisonment from the ghosts that he unknowingly decided to disturb..."Sit down, sit down, As we relive our lives in what we tell you, Let us relive our lives in what we tell you". He ain't going anywhere...anytime soon. Simply put, "Home by the Sea" is a wonderfully put together story that tells the tale of a burglar who is captured by the ghosts residing in a seaside home...forcing him to listen to their stories for the rest of his life. Magical.
