TheUglylucy4's video: Behind the Lines

@Behind the Lines
"Behind the Lines" was written by Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford and is the opening track off of the 1980 Genesis release...Duke. The LP is the tenth studio album by the band and the first to reach No. 1 in the UK. It spawned the singles "Turn It On Again", "Duchess", and "Misunderstanding". In the US, Duke climbed to the No. 11 spot. To understand "Behind the Lines", one must understand what the LP is all about. In its original form, "Behind The Lines", "Duchess", "Guide Vocal", "Turn It On Again", "Duke's Travels", and "Duke's End" were one 30-minute track that told a story of the fictional character "Albert". These songs are known as The Duke Suite. "Behind the Lines" is the opening of the story told in The Duke Suite which is about the somewhat morbid infatuation of the protagonist (Albert or perhaps Albert Duke) with a female pop singer referred to as the Duchess. In the ballad, Albert sees her picture in a magazine..."I held the book so tightly in my hands,I saw your picture, heard you call my name".He falls in love with her, and decides to attend one of her concerts..."There was something strange, I could not look away,I wanted to be there, I wanted to go". However she doesn't notice him in the crowd..."You gave me no warning,You gave no reason,But I was with you,Right by your side" as well as "But I'm looking right through you,And your heart is empty". Because of this lack of recognition, Albert decides to confront her in spite of the security guards that surround her..."And they can try their hardest, cos they don't frighten me". The guards bundle him up and she doesn't interfere with them escorting him away from her..."Whatever happened to you it's too late to change now,There's nowhere you can run to, no place to hide,Ah you let me down, But wait a minute, I don't understand,It's getting stronger, so grab my hand,Don't wanna leave you, don't wanna go,But I'm losing all control,Can't you see me,I'm slipping away,I can only stay if you've the will to keep me here". After that, Albert is holed up in his apartment and keeps staring at the picture and reading the magazine article over and over again..."It is written in the book,Oh so many times since I've read those words,Just waiting to see you, Can you see me". "Behind the Lines" is simply the story of an unknown (and obsessed) fan infatuated with a diva in the twilight of her career who mistakenly powers his delusion through media based magazines. "It is written in the book". Classic stuff leading off a great LP, telling a fantastic story. The cover art of Duke was drawn by French illustrator Lionel Koechlin, featuring the character Albert. Koechlin's artwork came from the book L'Alphabet d'Albert, published in 1979.
