"Two Tickets to Paradise" was written by Eddie Money and is the opening track off of his eponymous 1977 debut album...Eddie Money. The LP was basically a studio rendering of Money's live show at the time. As of 2106, the album is approaching triple platinum status. It peaked at No. 37 spawning "Two Tickets to Paradise" that climbed to the No. 22 spot. Money wrote "Two Tickets to Paradise" in regard to his girlfriend at the time. His girlfriend's mother wanted her to marry a doctor or a lawyer, not a musician. This was his bid in the hope of being allowed to take his girlfriend on vacation. The more general message contained in the ballad is that everyone always wants to escape their life and problems they have. In that view, it's easy to understand that our couple want to do more than just go on a trip...they want to escape the life they live in and be left alone together. That's the "paradise" they are searching for and most likely the "something that both of us have always wanted to do". The line "I've got two tickets in my pocket, now baby, we're gonna disappear" has led to many subliminal interpretations. Some of those have been in reference to a specific male anatomy and oral sex as well as drugs or pills. Either way the two would have to "disappear" to utilize either analogy. But to me, and most of us, "Two Tickets to Paradise" is a song of offering, hope, and romantic isolation. No doubt this is Eddie Money's best.
