TheUglylucy4's video: Won t Get Fooled Again

@Won't Get Fooled Again
"Won't Get Fooled Again" was written by Pete Townshend and is the ninth and final track off of The Who's 1971 masterpiece...Who's Next. The LP is the band's fifth studio album. It developed from the Townshend's aborted Lifehouse project, a multi-media rock opera written as a follow-up to the 1969 album Tommy. Who's Next has since been viewed by critics as the Who's best record and one of the greatest albums of all time. The LP's cover photo made reference to the monolith in the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, as it featured group members having urinated against a concrete piling protruding from a slag heap. "Won't Get Fooled Again" was written by Townshend as a closing number of the Lifehouse project, whose lyrics criticise revolution and power. The song is about a revolution. In the first verse, there is an uprising..."We'll be fighting in the streets,With our children at our feet,And the morals that they worship will be gone,And the men who spurred us on,Sit in judgment of all wrong,They decide and the shotgun sings the song". In the middle, those in revolt overthrow those in power..."The change, it had to come,We knew it all along,We were liberated from the fold, that's all,And the world looks just the same,And history ain't changed,Cause the banners, they are flown in the next war". But in the end, we come to learn the new regime becomes just like the old one..."There's nothing in the streets,Looks any different to me,And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye,And the parting on the left,Are now parting on the right,And the beards have all grown longer overnight". The lack of change is also brought home in the ballad's ending..."Meet the new boss,same as the old boss". It's obvious that Townshend felt revolution was pointless demonstrating to us whoever takes over is destined to become corrupt. That is understood in the song's chorus..."I'll tip my hat to the new constitution,Take a bow for the new revolution,Smile and grin at the change all around,Pick up my guitar and play,Just like yesterday,Then I'll get on my knees and pray,We don't get fooled again". In Townshend: A Career Biography, he explained that the song was antiestablishment, but that "revolution is not going to change anything in the long run, and people are going to get hurt". That pretty much sums up the eight minute and thirty-two second song. Unexplainably, with all the musical garbage out there that hit the No. 1 spot on the charts, this classic never did. No. 9 was the highest it ever charted. This could very well be the greatest rock song ever written. This version of "Won't Get Fooled Again" (showcasing The Who joined by Noel Gallagher) can be found on the 2003 release...Live at the Royal Albert Hall.
