"Shine On" was written by Peter Frampton and is the opening track off of Humble Pie's 1971 release...Rock On. This was the bands final studio LP to feature Frampton as within a year he had quit the group to pursue his solo career and take his music in a more acoustic direction. Frampton would go on to perform the song in his concerts and to be featured on his album Frampton Comes Alive. "Shine On" tells the story of a relationship in which the female interest isn't quite sure of just where she stands with her man. The opening lines..."Find it hard to see you in the dark, I looked around,You were beside me" kind of gives you the impression of our woman quietly keeping pace with her man, but yet stumbling behind him. This is understood immediately by him who offers her advice in a more convincing fashion..."Don't you realize it's hard to dream,Without your helping hand to guide me,This could be the one, girl,If you will be my sun". His motivation seems to come at us in the form of a love enduring purity..."Please look about and tell me what you see,All noise and dirt and plastic people,Cause love is clean,And ours has been a bluer shade of jade,Than black or white is". A final push to make her lead is heard before the song's chorus..."Take me on a ride, girl,Right there by my side, Oh". All this suggestion climaxes with..."Shine on, Shine on me, shine on you,Let it shine on,Shine on,All I have to do is let it shine on". In other words, she really doesn't have to do anything but what comes naturally to her...let her love shine and stop following behind in the shadows. "Shine On" is an inspirational ballad centered around the guidance and assurance that many times shows up to late in relationship.In this case, a mans proposal for his woman to do what should come naturally to her. Perhaps a spin-off from Frampton's "Show Me the Way"...another romantic gesture about a woman leading the relationship. Great song providing great advice.
