"A New York Christmas" was written by Rob Thomas and released as a single in 2003. Christmas songs like this are just too wonderful to conceal for eleven months of the year just to collect dust, only to be uncovered when the year's final month rolls around. This song packs an emotional punch and you have to remember that it was written post-9/11 which makes these lyrics very appropriate. It was in the season of 2002 that Rob Thomas wrote, recorded and released the Christmas single titled "A New York Christmas". The song intended to help raise funds for the Blythedale Childrens Hospital in Westchester, New York. Thomas had been performing here a number of years in a private concert for the children. He says..."It’s an amazing, sobering thing, you know, to go and you see someone who’s 11, 12 years old who’s going through more than I’ve ever gone through in my entire life. And, you say, ‘How’s your Christmas?". Perhaps the true meaning of Christmas can be found inside those words. Thomas would go on to to start Sidewalk Angels, not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing critically needed funds and support to grassroots groups across the country. It is the primary supporter and sponsor of a number of no-kill animal shelters and animal rescues, reflecting the passion of the foundation's co-founders to fight for the rights and fair treatment of those with no voice. Additionally, the foundation also supports a myriad of other causes, from childhood health and wellness to the fight against homelessness. The foundation takes its name from the line in this ballad..."And the sidewalk angels echo hallelujah". May we each find our own way to give back this season, where it be needed most.
