TheUglylucy4's video: Mary s Place

@Mary's Place
"Mary's Place" was written by Bruce Springsteen and is the eleventh track off of his 2002 release...The Rising. The LP, his twelfth, was his first studio album in seven years, it was also his first with the E Street Band in 18 years. Widely believed to have been based on Springsteen's reflections during the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, the album is predominantly centered upon themes of relationship struggles, existential crisis and social uplift. The Rising debuted as No. 1 on the Billboard charts and garnered a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2003. "Mary's Place" is a song that on face value can be interpreted in an obvious way, but looking at the opening lines most likely has a deeper meaning hidden there. Clearly the song is about a party and many believe drew it's name from the Sam Cooke song "Meet Me at Mary's Place" (another song about a party). Looking at those opening lines..."I got seven pictures of Buddha, The prophet's on my tongue, Eleven angels of mercy, Sighin' over that black hole in the sun, My heart's dark but it's risin', I'm pullin' all the faith I can see, From that black hole on the horizon, I hear your voice calling me". Could Springsteen possibly talking about someone who has died...perhaps in the attacks of 9/11. The song, especially in the context of The Rising, could be about the loss of the narrator's wife or girlfriend either due to 9/11 or otherwise...that is to be determined. In the first verse he speaks of all the efforts he has made understand this loss through religion. The "let it rain" line Springsteen once said came from a time when outside at parties he would hope for rain so that the party would move on to the inside of the house (for whatever reason). What the song makes clear is that his only way to find peace is to lose himself in the abandon of a loud house party. Even there of course he thinks of her. But you know, "turn it up, turn it up, turn it up" and "let's get this thing started". It's a beautiful song of horrific loss and beautiful redemption through music. It's one of his finest songs since the 70's.
