Ewan McGregor plays Christian, a romantic writer who moves to Paris in 1899 and is drafted by a small group of artist friends to help craft a musical play for the Moulin Rogue, a nightclub/bordello whose director (Jim Broadbent) seeks to turn into a legit theater and showcase for his star prostitute Satine (Nicole Kidman). Their funding comes from "The Duke" (Richard Roxburgh), who demands that Kidman only service himself, which is inconvenient since Satine and Christian have fallen in love. "Moulin Rogue!" is a 2001 musical directed by Baz Luhrmann that utilizes an anachronistic soundtrack of popular music recorded decades after the story takes place.
