@UNREPENTANT: The Genocide of Canada's Indigenous Peoples
A must see, award-winning documentary, “Unrepentant: Kevin Annett and Canada's Genocide” was produced by Reverend Kevin Annett, author of “Hidden from History: The Canadian Holocaust”, and “Love and Death in the Valley”. The film documents the heartbreaking story of the centuries-long abuse and genocide of the native peoples of Canada at the hands of the powers-that-be: from the deliberate contagion of whole tribes with smallpox by British colonial authorities in the 18th century, to the systematic abuse (and, quite often, murder) of Native children at residential schools during the 20th century. Why was this done? Well, for the usual, menial purposes of stealing land and resources and, of course, in the name of ethnic and cultural cleansing. Some people seem to believe civilization should somehow be synonymous to an orderly, predictable, monotonous social graveyard. Why organize human civilization around the idea of giving Humanity a home, and a future, when you can just lock her down and degrade her in the name of mindless power? The documentary also touches upon the legacy of the horrors of the past for Native populations of today. The fact is that most Native children who are born are almost certain to be delivered to lives of social exclusion and emiseration, unemployment and welfare, daily exposure to crime, narcotics and alcoholism – and the descent into hopelessness and social despair. And, it is only just that the film would also follow the personal history of Reverend Kevin Annett, formerly with the United Church, then defrocked and made into a social outcast for his brave and principled exposure of the Native toil. One more thing. It is true the Native Canadian genocide was committed with the active assistance of several institutional Churches. Yet, don't throw the (literal) baby out with the bathwater: Christ has nothing to do with these actions, and the natural values of Judeo-Christian tradition in no way sanction these atrocities. They openly condemn them. Human freedom, progress, love, compassion, and caring have nothing to do with prejudice, intrigue, power, destruction and death. As Christ once cast the sinners out of the Temple, so he casts people who behave as such out of his flock. The death of the soul is the worst of all punishments, and there is no doubt these people felt it for all it is even during their lifetimes. “UNREPENTANT: Kevin Annett and Canada’s Genocide” won the awards for Best International Documentary at the 2006 Los Angeles Independent Film Festival, and for Best Director for an International Documentary at the 2006 New York International Film Festival.
