This is a Spoon Studios's video: Distance - Short Film comedy Drama Suspense Long Distance Relationship

Distance is a comedic, yet suspenseful short film that follows Alice visiting her long distance relationship (LDR) boyfriend Ethan in Burnaby British Columbia. It follows her painfully awkward trip from taking an Uber, meeting Ethans roommates etc. This film is filled with suspense, comedy, awkward tension and heartbreak. I was going to release this as soon as Uber was launched in Vancouver but I've grown impatient. This film was an impulsive no budget excuse to hang out with friends and to get over some heartbreak that was overwhelming my thoughts several months ago. I was feeling down and haunted by the theme of realizing that something you experienced as meaningful was seemingly meaningless to other person you experienced it with. Sounds emo I'll admit, but it fuelled me to want to torture a fictional character into feeling how I felt at the moment. I was inspired by my students boasting about their exciting 5 year plans, annoyed at the non-stop rejection to get my most recently written feature film off the ground and mourning at the thought I hadn't created enough lately. I wrote this little script impulsively on a Friday, inspired by my gloomy drive home from work, my currently messy home, the failed long distance dating stories of friends and unwittingly inspired by the beautiful short film Tokyo Lovers by Nach Dudsdeemaytha and Mayumi Yoshida (which is a real masterful short film if you haven't seen it https://vimeo.com/376049636). We shot this film in a night with a two person crew (swapping boom ops Tristian for Steve mid shoot). And although it has a low-fi look & feel; the wonderful collaboration of cast members Carolyn Yonge, Jerome Yoo, Kashif Pasta, Mike Doaga, and Breann Grainger really made this glorified camera test a wonderfully uncomfortable short film. Also huge thanks to my partner in crime as always Robert Phaneuf for post sound work and Harrison for letting us use his song. This film reminded me of how nourishing creativity is and why filmmaking is was and will always be in many ways, my one true love. - Joel (Director /Writer/ Editor /Cinematographer)
