You don't have to get hundreds of clients. You don't need dozens of them either. You only need 4. Four people who need your expertise to solve an important business problem. This is The Four Yes Theory. I've been saying startup digital marketing agencies and even creatives (brand strategists, graphic designers, and other freelancers) should charge clients at least $25,000 in a year. Before, it wasn't crucial that you get the $25,000 in one project because times were great. The economy was booming and clients were plentiful. If a "high-ticket" client only paid you $10,000 for a project, you could go get 2 more without too much trouble. But today... when no one knows what tomorrow will bring... people only invest in "sure things" and mission critical projects. A sure thing is that there is a near certain chance of getting a good ROI. If you have a FB ads agency then you better have lots of examples of taking a business just like your prospects and making fairly quick profit for them. Mission critical is any project companies deem necessary for continued operation. The truth is there aren't very many of these so you have to be good at communicating how your service provides mission critical solutions. "But Tim, I'm a website designer. Websites aren't mission critical." Uh, what era do you live in? People literally can't do face-to-face right now so communicating online IS mission critical. Your ability to design a site that helps businesses communicate with and convert prospects and resell customers is critical to the survival of a business. Here's a harder one: graphic design. Doesn't sound mission critical on the surface, but again we go back to the purpose of design -- to communicate ideas. We need better design today more than we've ever needed it. It's up to you to communicate it. Now, back to the topic... $25,000 is the minimum. You need to get it in as little time as possible. Don't, and I do mean, DON'T take installment payments that go more than a few months. If you want to transform your life, you need to get your year's worth of bills paid as fast as possible. If your bills are more than $100,000 then you need to charge more and maybe find a few more yeses during the year. If your bills are $25,000 for the year and you get 1 yes that pays you in 1 month, you would have the security of knowing you had 11 more months to get another yes.
