I didn’t know she was my cousin when I fell in love with her but let me start from the beginning… I was a lady’s man because I had the looks and the charm. I am also an only son from a very wealthy family, so all the ladies wanted to date me. I am not proud to say that I had lots of girlfriends back then and I always had to make sure that they never met each other. I bumped into Gina at my mate’s birthday bash 2 years ago. She had all the qualities I wanted in a woman…. pretty, tall and beautiful long legs. I tried to talk to her but she ignored me. I got more obsessed and was determined to make her my girlfriend. I later found out that she was invited by my mate’s younger sister, Doris….so I easily got her phone number from Doris. I called Gina the next day and introduced myself as the guy who tried to chat with her during the party. She got pissed and hung up the phone. That didn’t stop me, in fact it made me more determined, so I sent her text messages every single day. When I didn’t get any reply, I made a deal with Doris to get her a pair of her favourite shoes in exchange for Gina’s house address. She didn’t hesitate and gave me her house address so I started sending flowers to her house. Gina must have been embarrassed because she agreed to go out on a date with me if I stopped sending the flowers. We went out on a first date, then second …then on several dates and eventually started dating. There was something special about her…she was different from the other girls I met…and very smart. I was seriously thinking about breaking up with everyone so that I can focus on my relationship with Gina, but was not ready for what was going to happen next. One day, Gina showed up at my apartment unexpectedly and met me with one of my girlfriends. She was shocked and just stood there, looking at us. “I…. I …. can explain” I stammered, but she turned around and ran out of my apartment. “Please wait …. wait Gina” I yelled as I chased after her. She got into a taxi and left. When I got back to my apartment, my girlfriend stared at me in anger, gave me a big slap and said “Don’t ever call me again” I tried to call Gina but she would not pick up her phone. So, I begged my mate’s sister to convince Gina to give me another chance. She promised to try but days turned into weeks, yet I had still not seen or heard from Gina. I was almost going crazy and could not take it anymore…… so I hired a limousine and a microphone and went straight to Gina’s house. I started singing a love song to Gina, her parents came out and didn’t look very pleased but I was determined to make an impression so I sang as loud as I could. Gina finally came out and I could see the tears in her eyes. She hugged me and said “I forgive you but please don’t hurt me again”. I felt so relieved and I promised never to hurt her again. The next day, I took her to the best restaurant and asked her to marry me, and she said yes!! I informed my parents and they were thrilled at the good news. They decided to travel back from Canada and help with the wedding arrangements. I organised a family dinner at my house so that my parents can meet Gina and her parents. I knew my parents would love Gina and accept her as their daughter in law so I was really looking forward to the union. My mum is an amazing cook and, of course, she made sure the dining table was filled with assorted types of food. Anyway, Gina and her parents arrived and I went to open the door. They were excited to see me and I got a big hug from Gina’s Dad. I ushered them into the living room and introduced my parents. The room suddenly became quiet and I saw my Dad stare at Gina’s Mum in shock. “Beth!” He yelled, “Where have you been”. Gina’s mum was staring back in shock. She didn’t say a word and then started to cry. My Dad rushed up to console her and they hugged each other. “Can someone please explain what is going on here”, I said. Then my Dad explained that Gina’s Mum is his sister who left the house when she was only 18 because she was pregnant and their parents didn’t approve of the pregnancy. My Dad further explained that he tried to reach her all these years but his attempt was unsuccessful. We all just sat in silence for a long time…..not saying anything to ourselves….just staring in emptiness. The woman of my dream…my future wife…the only woman I want to share my life with…is actually my cousin. Well…now that dream is over…. and has become my worst nightmare!
