I wrote the melody in 1999 when I was a contestant for the guitar flatpicking contest at Merlefest in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, in the foothills of the blue ridge mountains. I called the tune "Headed Down To Merlefest" . (I didn't win the flatpicking contest. But it was fun to do and I met Del McCoury in the process.) Then in 2019, while playing the tune, suddenly the lyrics for this song came to me while reminiscing about the time I heard Doc Watson sing with Dolly Parton at the festival in 2001. Merlefest is an amazing annual event that I hope to attend again someday. I was fortunate to hear Doc Watson in concert on numerous occasions and I even met him once briefly at the Grey Fox music festival. May Doc and Merle both rest in peace. Thank you for the music!!
