Documentary episodes: "My home: Nuclear Base Semipalatinsk-21", Episode 05: "5 Kiloton Lake" - Call for Expedition! Yuriev.TV (Expeditionary Production) is setting up an expedition to the atomic lakes of Kazakhstan populated by vast variety of mutated biological organisms. We are inviting scientists, specializing in studies of DNA, and Evolutionary Biology and other, to join us on this expedition. Background information for our project: During 1950 - 1990 in Kazakhstan on the nuclear tests site Semipalatinsk-21 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semipalatinsk_Test_Site), were made about 600 nuclear explosions, including underground "peaceful tests" which were used to create lakes. Since late 60's experimental biological station on the atomic lake "Chagan" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chagan_(nuclear_test), held a series of experiments to investigate the residual effects of radiation on living organisms. For several years, the lake was inhabited by 36 species of fish, collected around the world (including the Amazonian piranhas), 27 species of mollusks, 32 species of amphibians, 11 reptiles, 8 species of mammals, 42 species of invertebrates and almost 150 species of plants, including algae and etc. During the experiments, about 90% of the organisms died-out. Survivors were observed abnormal number of mutations and changes in the appearance of the offspring (eg, freshwater crayfish is extremely increased in size). In 1974 an experimental station was closed and later on abandoned. Ever since these lakes were populated by constantly mutating flora and fauna. There are many legends and rumors regarding creatures existing down there, but no real facts. Due to poor economy in Kazakhstan and Russia, these lakes were not yet researched. Depth of these radioactive lakes, ranges anywhere from 50 to 500 meters down, and spread into a network of underwater caves. Two of the lakes are available for your preview at: - Balapan (Chagan) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjVl8A8NMMs - Unnamed (5KT) lake http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEuuTbjvOXU We are looking for scientists interested in participation. Episode 05: "5 Kiloton Lake" At about 10 miles, away from the epicenter, the grass is greener, birds are singing, horses, in the distance are grazing together with camels - It's an idyllic picture. But yet, we are trying to walk around very carefully, not to lift any rocks, or just step too hard. The ground, around us, is still highly radioactive. At about 11 miles away from the epicenter, we found a very nice looking lake, made with about 5 kilotons of TNT. It should be swimmable, of course radioactive, but still - without terrible premature death. It is about 600 ft deep, exact numbers are unknown, as there are caves at the bottom, going deep down into the earth... According to the locals, sometimes shadows of about 10 meters in length pass at the depth. Locals believe it's some type of a fish. But no one tried to catch it yet... For the last 50 years, these sort of lakes, contained constantly mutated creatures. How these biological organisms changed, and adapted, was never researched... We will try to investigate, what's down there, during our next expedition. For now, our 45 minutes of radiation safety, are over. -- Short documentary episodes.
