New music from me, made because I had an itch during these quarantine times. It’s a re-score of a movie scene this time. The movie in question is the 2019 Russian steampunk fantasy film “Abigail,” which follows the titular protagonist living inside a walled city where people with magical abilities are kidnapped under the pretense of being “diseased,” and she must use her newfound abilities to solve the disappearance of her father. I’ve been itching to really flex my fantasy music writing chops for a while now, so I figured why not just re-score a scene from a fantasy movie? I wanted something that I could get really bombastic and majestic with, and this ambush scene from this film really provided the perfect opportunity. James Newton Howard is one of my favorite composers, especially his fantasy works, so you might hear a lot of influence in my writing style from him. It’s one of my goals to write music for a fantasy film at some point in my life, so here’s hoping, and in the meantime, I’ll make more stuff like this! One of my goals in for this piece was to really force myself to orchestrate more with woodwinds in a bombastic, gigantic action piece, and while I don’t think it was a perfect success, I think I did reasonably well, all things considered! I’ve definitely been teaching myself to use woodwinds a lot more recently, and how better to orchestrate for brass, and the whole orchestra really. I also challenged myself by trying to incorporate two of composer Ryan Otter's original themes for the film into my own piece, to keep a motivic continuity. Hope you folks all like it!
