Where did the 2011 Arab Spring go wrong? On the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks 19 years ago, I’m posting this discussion from February 2012. Both these torture victims ask: could developments in Egypt and Iran have turned out differently if Western policy had been more engaged? * Just released from Egyptian prison: Maikel Nabil, Hero of Cairo’s Tahrir Square in the Arab Spring, campaigner against political Islam, jailed for “insulting the Egyptian army”. (Maikel had trained as a vet before he was imprisoned.) * Jailed, tortured & abused by the Iranian regime: Ebrahim Mehtari, pro-democracy activist and political prisoner. (Ebrahim was in college studying software engineering when he was arrested and severely tortured after taking part in the Green Movement pro-democracy demonstrations against the regime.)
