Cienfuegos a city located on the southern coast of Cuba, about 250 km from Havana on the Gulf of Cienfuegos (Caribbean Sea) It is called the Pearl of the South (Spanish: La Perla del Sur) Cienfuegos literally means "hundred fires" In 2005, the historic center of Cienfuegos was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city now known as Cienfuegos was founded by immigrants of French origin. The French arrived on the island in 1819 as part of a plan to increase the white population in Cuba. The city was first named Fernandina de Jagua in honor of the Spanish King. Since 1819, the city has had its current name - Cienfuegos, in honor of the governor who settled the French here. Cienfuegos owes its prosperity to sugar cane, and specifically to the sugar trade.
