Tony Whitburn's video: Song Reaction 25: Station To Station by David Bowie

@Song Reaction 25: Station To Station by David Bowie
Station To Station Further Thoughts While this record might not be the most obvious entry point in Bowie's discography, it has proven to be a deliciously futuristic ride for me. The influences and styles Bowie merges in songs like Golden Years and the eponymous track are a testimony of his creative power, and although I haven't heard yet any other of his records, the individual songs I did know by him show me how much he evolved in a matter of about 6 years. This record might be short, but is enjoyable in its full lenght. As I said during the reaction, Bowie know very well how to balance complexity with poppyness, and although the most complex song is by far Station To Station, the rest of them offer us a deeper cut into his universe. Word On A Wing is a beautiful and introspective approach on modern faith. It's a man vs ideas situation, where even if the man is willing to surrender, there will always be this voice inside his head that would makes him wonder: are you sure? TVC15 is a satire on how technology, even back then, consumed us to the point of making US the machine, just like a nanovirus converting the masses, and in my opinion, the most relevant song for current times. Stay is probably the saddest song on the record for me. Despite its upbeat music, the lyrics here seem to depict the history of two lovers who don't really love each other and are growing tired of being together. Perhaps another introspective representation of Bowie's state of mind, or maybe just his approach on casual relationships. Finally, Wild Is the Wind is a tender poem in the form of a song. And even if Bowie himself didn't write this particular song, he does a wonderful job performing it like if it was his. In only 6 songs, this record covers plenty of topics that concern more than just one listener. It speaks to us about our modern relationships with others, with our ideals and our way of living, always leaving enough room for us to question: is any of this worth it at all? ———— May the socials be the bomb, the bomb, the bomb that will bring us together.
