Avid travelers and adventurers have explored many parts of the world around us, from top tourist destinations to areas a bit more off the beaten track. However, there are some places on the Earth that no human has ever visited. Keep watching to see our countdown of the top 10 most isolated places on the planet. 10 Mariana Trench, Pacific Ocean When we are thinking about the areas of the planet that have not been explored, the first part that springs to mind is the vast ocean. Large parts of the ocean remain unexplored even to this day. One of the biggest areas to be unexplored is the Mariana Trench, in the western Pacific Ocean. The trench is a narrow opening on the sea floor that was formed millions of years ago, which goes down deep into the underground – so deep in fact that it has been labelled as the deepest part of the ocean. The trench was formed due to the movement of tectonic plates and volcanic eruptions. It has 20 underwater volcanos which pour out liquid sulfur into the crack, making the pressure levels around 10,000 times stronger than the surface water. Many have tried to reach the bottom of the trench, estimated to be at least 36,000 feet below sea level. Famous movie director James Cameron, who explores isolated places in the world in his spare time, descended 35,756 feet during a 2010 exploration. Due to the unusual nature of the trench, it became a designated a protected marine reserve under the control of the USA in 2009. Who knows what they will find the deeper down that they go… 9) Namib Desert, Namibia From one of the wettest places on Earth to one of the driest, in at number 9 is the sweltering Namib Desert, located in the south of the country. This place is difficult to get to and navigate as it has few paved roads over a large expanse of area, and it is covered in giant sand dunes. Due to this harsh environment, it is one of the least populated places on the planet. The area is also home to a world record holder – the tallest sand dune in the world which measures at 1256 feet tall – we wouldn’t want to try and climb that! The region is the oldest desert on the planet and has 31,000 square miles of land that is almost totally uninhabited. It gets around 2mm of rain per year and is one of the arid places on earth – meaning that very few plants and animals can survive here. Imagine the sunburn! 8) Gangkhar Puensum, Bhutan Coming in the number 8 in our countdown is Gangkhar Puensum in the Asian country of Bhutan. This impressive mountain is the highest one in the world that has not been climbed by man. Many climbers have attempted to access the mountain, but none have made it to the very peak, which sits at around 25,000 feet. Local people believe that the mountain is haunted by spirits and due to the fear of these spirits, climbing the mountain has been forbidden since 2003. This means that number 8 on our list may be the location that remains unexplored for the longest, as people would need to break the law to get there. 7) Northern Patagonia, Chile The Patagonian mountains in Chile have long had the reputation as being one of the most isolated areas on Earth. It is home to one of the largest areas of ice outside either the North or South pole, but the ice is quickly melting! Scientists have discovered that the glaciers in this region are the fastest melting glaciers in the whole world, losing around 21 billion tons of ice every year. As this glacier is so large however, a lot of it remains unexplored and has only been viewed by satellites. If there are explorers out there who fancy seeing the glaciers of Patagonia, they better plan their trip soon before it is too late. 6) Sarlacc Pit, Canada Nicknamed the Sarlacc Pit, this huge cave was discovered in Canada in 2018. Its name originates from the beast that lives in the pit in the Star Wars franchise. The cave can be found in British Colombia within the Provincial Park and was spotted during a helicopter flight which was flying over the land. The cave remained undiscovered for so long as it had been covered in year-round snow, until around 25 years ago when the snow melted due to global warming. The only known explorer to venue into the cave’s depths is Caver Lee Hollis, who reached around 260 feet into the cave before discovering a waterfall. Imagine what it was like being the first person ever to explore this area, how exciting yet terrifying!
