Tracking the Wild's video: Lions Mating Angry Lioness

Lions mating in the road at Welgevonden Game Reserve. Footage by Jonathan Spencer. As with other cat species, the male lion's (panthera leo) penis has spines that point backward. When a male finishes mating and withdraws his penis, the spines scratch the inner walls of the female's vagina. This is the reason why lionesses show such an angry and violent reaction (growling, snarling and scratching) towards the male at the end of copulation. Critically, the spines scratch the inner walls of the female's vagina which stimulates her to ovulate. Female lions are polyestrous in that they do not have a specific breeding season and will come into heat at any time of the year. The gestation period for lions is 110 days and litters are generally between 1 and 4 cubs.
