Tractor Mike's video: Deere s Final Offer Striking UAW Workers Reject 2nd Company Proposal

@Deere's Final Offer? Striking UAW Workers Reject 2nd Company Proposal
By a much narrower margin, striking workers of John Deere have rejected the second offer presented them at a vote earlier this week. Deere is indicating it's the last offer. 55% of the 10,000 striking workers voted to reject the offer, while 45% voted in favor, so the various United Auto Workers Unions that are represented in the Deere organization remain off work and the company is proceeding with the "next phase of their Customer Continuation plan." This week's proposal was actually approved by a small group of UAW organizations, but overwhelmingly shot down by the union organizations based in Waterloo and Dubuque, Iowa. The package included an immediate raise of 10% for hourly workers, plus additional raises of 5% in both years three and five of the contract, plus an immediate bonus of $8500 if the proposal had passed. The sticking point; reportedly; is a refusal by the company to provide free medical insurance for retiring employees. Currently, anyone employed before 6/1/97 gets free insurance after retiring, those employed after that date do not. Strikers wanted the provision extended to all employees. It seems like some of the negotiation power of Deere has improved since the first proposal was presented to workers on October 14th. That offer was soundly defeated with a negative vote of 90%. This week's 45%-55% margin indicates a large part of the workforce is eager to settle. Harvest is nearing an end and the seasonal demand for farm and industrial equipment and support will be starting to wane. While fluctuating some during the walkout. Deere's stock remains relatively strong. Finally, Deere may be planning to expand responsibilities of their global workforce to negate the impact of developments in the U.S. The strike has tremendous implications for other farm equipment manufacturers who have upcoming labor negotiations coming up in the next couple of years. With the global shortage of equipment that exists now, the leverage of the workers would seem to be at an all-time high. LINKS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT...
