Tractor Mike's video: Teaching My Daughter to Chainsaw

My daughter Reagan is home from college and wants to learn to use a chainsaw. We have a tree down in the pasture so I'm going to give her the basics of how to operate a chain saw and pray that she retains enough of this information to be safe. Chainsaws are a dangerous tool and I wanted to get her started on the right foot. I told her about how the 2-cycle engine requires a mixture of fuel and oil, where to put the blade oil, and how to grease the end of the bar. Then I showed her how to start it and how to keep the blade out of the ground and to keep from pinching the bar in a log. I invested in all of the chainsaw safety gear from Stihl, and made Reagan wear it. We were going to use my Stihl "Limbing" saw for the training, because it's light, but it's not running right, so I dug out my dad's old Homelite and let her learn on it. She got it started and going, I found out later that she'd not pushed the choke all the way in, so some of the rough running/poor cutting you see at the end of the video was the result of that. When she had everything working right we got a good start on taking the pieces of the tree out. There's still a lot more to do and we won't get back to it while she's on spring break. I try not to be an overprotective dad, so I let Reagan find her own way with the operation of the saw. She's pretty good with equipment and she retains information well, so I hope she was absorbing everything I was telling her. It's hard to turn loose of the reigns, but she seemed to be respecting the dangers and using it in the correct manner. If you never run a chainsaw, you'll be amazed at how much body strength it requires to operate it. A few hours cutting wood and you'll be sore the next day.
