Tractor Mike's video: Stump Grinder Versus Backhoe There s a Clear Winner

@Stump Grinder Versus Backhoe, There's a Clear Winner
In this video I answer a viewer question about removing stumps. He has some 6-8" undesirable trees that he wants to remove. He'll chainsaw them down because he doesn't want a bulldozer disrupting the soil. Should he buy or rent a backhoe, or a stump grinder to get rid of the stumps that will remain so he can safely bush hog over the land?. Last week I had a chance to compare, in real time, an industrial stump grinder versus a mini-excavator for getting rid of two similar stumps. In my mind the stump grinder was the clear winner. This demonstration was made possible when my neighbor Matt removed some trees from his yard. There was a large oak that was dying, and two smaller trees that weren't what he wanted there. He owns a landscape company, so he can get deals on trees. A tree company was there to cut down the large oak and while they were there I asked them if they'd be willing to grind one of the stumps while I filmed. Matt dug the other out with his Bobcat Mini Excavator. The video shows both projects, in real time, side-by-side. One of the problems with using a backhoe/mini-ex for stump removal is that it takes a lot of time, and you're left with a big hole that must be filled and massaged before seeding. With a stump grinder you turn the stump into sawdust, and throw some grass seed on top of it, stomp it down and you're done. Having said that, if the stump were in your yard you'd want to bring some topsoil in to get the turf growing back. In the pasture or woods that wouldn't matter. By my estimation, it takes 1/3-1/2 the time to grind a stump versus digging it out. If I had a bunch of stumps I wanted rid of, I'd get all of the trees cut down, the brush out of the way, then I'd rent a stump grinder for a day. The first few would be slow while I was figuring out the machine, after that they'd probably go really fast. Of course, a stump grinder is a tool that can only be used for one thing, a backhoe can be used for tons of different projects. For stump removal though, a stump grinder is the way to get the maximum number removed in the shortest time. LINKS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT...
