About 10km south of Varkala, this island in the middle of a backwater lake is home to the Shiva-Parvati Hindu temple, also known as the Golden Temple. It's closed to non-Hindus but the main reason to venture down here is the scenic punt-powered boat ride to and around the island. Ponnumthuruthu Island is popular for Shiva Parvati Temple which is also known as 'Thuruthu Kshethram' by local residents. It's situated amongst thick coconut groves. It's a 100 years old temple which was ruined but later on it was rebuilt again.
