Trevor Nygaard's video: Hunting for squalls The Friendly Pirates ep 28 La Parguera to Guanica Puerto Rico

@Hunting for squalls! The Friendly Pirates ep. 28 (La Parguera to Guanica Puerto Rico)
The adventure continues south along the coast of Puerto Rico. Not much distance covered in this episode..only a mere 10nm east after 30 under the keel and 8 hours later, but this is the challenge of "sailing to windward" The entire journey I am on right now is referred to as the "thorny passage to windward" because you are sailing in the exact direction the wind is coming from. On a sailboat you cannot sail directly into the wind, you have to veer off 20-30 degrees and flip back and forth over and over, taking whatever progress the ocean will give you. The biouminescence bay that I anchored in was one of the most peaceful moments I have ever experienced in my life. There are only 5 of these types of bays in the world, bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by a living organism. It is a form of chemiluminescence. Bioluminescence occurs widely in marine vertebrates and invertebrates, as well as in some fungi, microorganisms including some bioluminescent bacteria and terrestrial invertebrates such as fireflies. In some animals, the light is bacteriogenic, produced by symbiotic organisms such as Vibrio bacteria; in others, it is autogenic, produced by the animals themselves. The effect that I experienced swimming is almost impossible to describe - imagine that ANY disturbance you produce to the water emits a blue glow, and once something is disturbed and glowing its neighbor also fires off and the effect grows and grows around you. I attempted to capture this with the the gopros but it was just too difficult to portray the awesomeness. Just me, in the middle of nowhere for 3 days with an abundance of marine life all around me - birds singing all night, tarpon and barracudas patrolling the waters below me lighting up the waters as they swam at night, it was a picture perfect zen sanctuary and I really didn't want to leave. At the point of this filming it has been 6 days since I have last seen another human or stepped off the boat, a truly unique experience. In the previous episode we were ducking for cover from a late season tropical disturbance passing overhead that could have formed up into a hurricane. Luckily it didn't, and I used this opportunity to test both my own sailing abilities and the boat by putting us both in a bit more "sporty" conditions - the squalls lasted all day and as soon as one finished passing over another was right behind it. After getting my butt kicked all day we find and explore a super cool location called "Gilligans Island" and snorkeled in the mangroves. Since it was on a weekday, I had the entire place to myself, all day! I later found out that on the weekends there will be HUNDREDS of people out there having a great time partying and having a nice BBQ. Me personally... ill take a spot all to myself.
