Arggghh me hearties! Welcome to another sailing adventure aboard the White Pearl with The Friendly Pirates. In this episode we take on the Mona passage, which is a 100 nautical mile stretch of water between Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. Feared by many with no shortage of horror stories of sunken vessels and lives lost, the Mona passage is the second deepest segment of ocean on the planet next to the Mariana trench. With dangerous shoals in the path (18 thousand feet deep sloping up to 100 ft in a distance of less than 100 yards) and treacherous weather rolling off Puerto Rico its pretty easy to understand why many fear this voyage. As I have learned over the last two years this can all be mitigated by proper planning, research and a sound vessel and captain up to the task. It was a picture perfect crossing that most sailors only dream of for the Mona passage. What an adventure I had in this episode - probably the best time I had in my entire life. Running from the Dominican Republic navy, spending 3 days at sea in one of the most dangerous nautical areas on the planet, almost driving the boat into a cliff and a stressful US coast guard boarding all added up to one heck of a great story!
