Cruising around the islands on a sailboat creates so many different emotions, often they mix themselves up all at once and this is exactly what I was feeling in this episode. On one hand I was having the time of my life in the beautiful island of Culebra and was very sad to leave, but on the other I was completely stoked to head to the Virgin Islands to work on my United States Coast Guard OUPV captain license. Its a constant pull and pull from each feeling but I am starting to realize that this is what adventuring is all about. Sailing to St Thomas from Culebra is short 20nm to the east, but since we are still faced with east trade winds it is more tacking back and forth upwind, beating and scratching for any progress I can. Seas were lumpy and confused the bulk of the day but conditions improved the closer I got to the island as the landmass knocks down swell and windspeed. St. Thomas is one of the three islands that make up the United States Virgin Islands, with the other two being St. John and St. Croix. It is the most populated of the three and a very popular port for cruise ships arriving and departing on a daily basis. Its been the closest reminder of being back home in the stats and thus far and my least favorite island on the adventure. It did serve its purpose and I spent the next 6 weeks working hard on my license. It was strange to be back in "school" as I had class everyday and brutal 8 hour weekends each day. I wouldn't say that obtaining the license or tests was that hard, but there was just a very large amount of memorization required.. which as we all know does not mix well with a pirates primary diet of RUM!!
