Trevor Nygaard's video: Pirates in Luperon Dominican Republic TFP ep 24

Hello friends and welcome to another sailing adventure with The Friendly Pirates aboard the White Pearl! I spent 3 months in a little town called Luperon, located on the north coast of the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispanola. The reason I chose this location for the worst of the storm season is that it is considered the best hurricane hole in the entire Caribbean. If you are crazy enough to be in "hurricane alley" during the storm season, this is just about the best place to it. I used Luperon as a place to focus on working on improvements to the boat to prepare for the next cruising season, so much to my disappointment I was not able to spend time and money exploring the country via land - which is what most cruisers do when they come to Luperon. The check in process was a bit of a hassle compared to everywhere I have visited, almost comical at times. Luperon has a dark history of this as a problem, and you experience visiting here via boat will almost entirely depend on what kind of "commandante" is currently posted in the harbor running the show. I was told that the best one the town has seen in over a decade had JUST left a few days prior to my arrival (due to promotion of doing such a grat job) so I was unfortunately at the hands of fresh blood who was seemingly making it a point to suck as much money via new charges of new arrivals as possible... in essence undoing all the hard work the prior commandante had done to make the location a bit more cruiser friendly. Its an interesting dynamic between making the location attractive to visitors and earning money from them, and my opinion the balance was pretty far off, this was NOT a place that gave me a feeling of welcome arms. I made a ton of new friends, got to work on my Spanish for a few months and overall had a mostly pleasant time. With all that said, if I had to do it all over again or find myself in this general direction again on a boat I will most likely skip Luperon.
