As the worst of the hurricane season looms just around the corner, the time had come to get to my hurricane hole sanctuary of Luperon in the Dominican Republic. The original plan was to spend the season in Granada, but then the Bahamas happened and 2 days turned into 7 week... aaahhh the life of a pirate. I selected Luperon as a fallback plan prior to sailing off into the Caribbean for its superior closed in protection, proximity to the mountains and the ease of use of emergency facilities. Its safe to say I do not think spending a hurricane season inside the belt is a great idea at all, but this was the best option of that idea and also followed by many sailors before me. The original plan was to sail across the entire Turks bank east so that I would have a better angle to sail directly to Luperon, but what little weather window I had was going to evaporate in just a few days and the decision was made to leave from a spot called French Cay.
