We have unlimited great weather year round We have quick access to fantastic outdoor activities And of course we have the greatest sports fans in the world The second fact that everyone knows is that Denver has a serious housing crisis. Finding an affordable place to rent is extremely difficult unless you want to have multiple room mates and live far away from the city And the cost to purchase a new house keeps getting higher and higher One possible solution to help this crisis is the building more ADU’s An ADU is short for Accessory Dwelling Unit You may have heard them called by different names, Carriage house, Cottage house, Mother in law apartment or Alley house. But really they are all very similar if not the same “In a nut shell and ADU is a standalone smaller house that you can build in your backyard either attached or detached from your house. It is hooked up to the utilities, it will have its own kitchen, bath room and bedrooms. In Denver they can be as large as 1000 square feet “ADU’s can be used for short term rentals like Air BNB, long term rentals or the most popular use for an ADU is housing for family member like an aging parent or grand parent This is also a great solution if you have an adult child that you do not want to live under your roof any longer but you would like to keep them close by” And the biggest benefit of building an ADU’s is that it will increase the value of your home Currently in the city of Denver has less than 8% of the homes have the correct zoning to build an ADU and this just is not enough however, the city of Denver is currently looking at the option to revise some of the zoning laws to allow more people in Denver to build an ADU.
