Nach dem Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges entsteht nun die erste parlamentarische Demokratie auf deutschem Boden, die sogenannte Weimarer Republik. Hyperinflation, Massenarbeitslosigkeit, Straßenschlachten und politische Morde prägen die Zeit. Gleichzeitig erleben Literatur, Architektur, Theater und das neue Medium Film eine Blütezeit, die allerdings genauso wie die Demokratie mit der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten im Januar 1933 abrupt endet.
