Planning a trip to Java, Indonesia? This video covers the attractions of Yogyakarta, Java island's largest tourist magnet & cultural capital. We also cover the beautiful Parangtritis beach 32km from Yogyakarta and then take you on an early morning sunrise trek to the crater summit of Mt.Merapi, Indonesia's most explosive, dangerous & active volcano! Yogyakarta is famous for its proximity to Borobudur & Prambanan, two of the most spectacular ancient temple compounds in the entire world. Prambanan is an awe-inspiring hindu temple complex while Borubudur is the largest buddhist monument in the entire world. They can both be easily done as a day-trip from Yogyakarta. Yogyakarta also boasts the water castle (Taman Sari), which was the former Royal Garden & bathing pools of the Sultanate. You can immerse yourself in history by visiting the Dutch Fort Vredeburg and its museum. There is also the unmissable Yogyakarta Palace (Kraton), the cultural & political heart of the city. Parangtritis Beach, 32km from Yogya is a great day trip. This scenic and quiet beach is made all the more interesting by horses trotting along the edges of the waves, towing cartloads of excited Indonesian locals. The rocky headland at the far end of the beach makes for a wonderful backdrop for photographs. Yogyakarta is not too far away from the most formidable volcano in Java island: Mt.Merapi. The tiny village of Selo lies at the foot of the volcano and it is here that you must first reach, although getting to Selo by public transport is not entirely straightforward. The hike for the sunrise begins around 1 a.m and you must move quite quickly in the dark to reach the summit for sunrise. The summit (2,930m) is more than 1,300 vertical metres above the starting point in Selo village. Merapi is the most active & dangerous volcano in Indonesia so do this hike at your own risk!
