Personality disorders are complicated. Personality disorders can be influenced by a variety of things such as stressors in one's life, financial status, major changes such as marriage or divorce, age, culture, race, socio-economic status, etc. That's why it is important to have an expert or someone very experienced with identifying and treating personality disorders to treat you if you need to pursue psychotherapy. Remember, personality disorders get worse without treatment and yet, personality disorders aren't easy to treat. The only time someone with a personality disorder gets treatment is if they are forced into it somehow (i.e., custody challenges, the legal system, an angry and frustrated spouse, a boss's request, etc).
