Join us for a discussion with artist Nakeya Brown as we celebrate the release of the catalog for More Than a Woman: Photographs by Nakeya Brown on March 24, 2017. Guests are invited to meet and mingle with the artist and panelists and join the conversation. Meet the Panelists. Nakeya Brown was born in Santa Maria, California in 1988. She received her BA in Visual Arts and Journalism & Media Studies from Rutgers University and her Master of Fine Arts from The George Washington University. Her photography has been exhibited at the McKenna Museum of African American Art, Woman Made Gallery, and Vivid Solutions Gallery. Brown’s work has been included in New York, Nueva Luz, Dazed & Confused, The Fader, and Vice, and has been published by international publications Hysteria and Elephant. She lives and works in Washington, D.C with her 4-year-old daughter Mia. Martina Dodd is a Washington, D.C.-based art historian and curator. Her concept driven shows have touched on topics relating to race, gender and power dynamics. She is intrigued by the ways in which value is placed on art and seeks to examine the social impact material culture has on society. Dodd holds a MA in the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas from the University of East Anglia and a BA in Anthropology and International Studies from Johns Hopkins University. She is a founding editor of DIRT and a recent recipient of DC Arts Center's Curatorial Initiative fellowship and Transformer Gallery's Exercises for Emerging Artists residency. Andy Johnson is an art historian, curator, and currently director of Gallery 102 in Washington, D.C. His academic and curatorial practice centers on queer, feminist, and black feminist theories, critical race theory, cultural studies, photography, video, performance art, and visual culture. He received his M.A. in Art History from the George Washington University in 2015. He has presented research at universities including Rutgers, University of Georgia, U.C. Santa Barbara, and the George Washington University, recently contributed to DIRT DMV, and has curated shows for both Gallery 102 and the D.C. Arts Center.
