Carolina Alumni's video: Women s Activism and the Transformation of American Political Culture 1969-73 and 1973-2023

@Women’s Activism and the Transformation of American Political Culture, 1969-73 and 1973-2023
In the fall of 1969, times were a’changing when it came to women’s rights and aspirations. The class of 1973 – which initially included ten times as many men as women – would come of age during a golden period for the nascent Women’s Movement, when both parties and all branches of the federal government supported women’s advancement. Many doors opened, and women of all political persuasions poured through. Such remarkable transformation sparked powerful opposition and, by 1973, a second women’s movement of conservative women had organized, becoming increasingly powerful through the decade. Historian Marjorie J. Spruill ’73 has chronicled the rise of these two competing movements and their impact in a highly acclaimed book Divided We Stand: The Battle Over Women’s Rights and Family Values That Polarized American Politics. In conversation with UNC professor emerita Jacquelyn Hall, who arrived at UNC as a young professor in the mid-1970s, Spruill will discuss women’s activism at UNC and the nation in that pivotal era, as well as the subsequent impact on national affairs, up to and including our deeply polarized, highly partisan political culture of today. Jacquelyn Hall is Julia Cherry Spruill Professor Emerita and founding director of UNC’s Southern Oral History Program Marjorie Spruill ’73 is Distinguished Professor Emerita, University of South Carolina Moderator: Joseph Loveland ’73, formerly of King & Spalding LLP, Atlanta ============= Don't forget to subscribe to our channel and hit the notification bell to stay up-to-date on all of our latest videos.
